Sir Ganga Ram (1851-1927), a civil engineer and famous philanthropist of his day, founded this hospital in Lahore in 1921, and it was relocated to New Delhi eleven years later.
The current hospital in New Delhi is situated on a block of ground measuring around 11 acres.
The foundation was set in April 1951 by then-Indian Prime Minister Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru, who also opened it on April 13, 1954.
